For this last challenge I was really excited that we were asked to create an entire collection!!!  For the other challenges it was a struggle to edit down my ideas into just one or two fabrics.  It’s so hard to choose between different fabrics because they all important pieces to make a collection whole.  I still had a tough time narrowing it down to just four fabrics, so if given the chance to show at Quilt Market I will definitely show additional patterns!

I thought a lot about what defines my work:

-a touch of cute

- hand drawn

- love of vintage colors and motifs

- inspired by Japanese aesthetic

I also thought a lot about what I saw from the previous quilt market. This encouraged me to include patterns that were geometric and graphic, but in a very organic way to compliment the rest of my work. My collection Take A Hike! is the result!

Throughout the contest I’ve gained a better understanding of the quilting world and how to effectively design fabric for quilting.  I’ve learned so much about scale, choosing colors that will harmonize and repeats that will be easy to work with.

I also wanted to say how much I’ve enjoyed seeing the work of the other contestants, especially Michele’s and Krissy’s.  Michele is such a conceptual designer and I always look forward to reading about her process and inspiration.  I love her minimal approach to design and It’s no surprise to me that she’s won so many of the other rounds!  Krissy’s blog posts are so enjoyable to read because they are so personal and funny.  Her colors are consistently youthful and on trend.  I loved her Mid century Modern inspired patterns from last round.  I can’t wait to see what they both come up with for the final!

Thank you Ellen, Madeleine for all the time you’ve put into this. Big thanks to my awesome family for being so enthusiastic in supporting me! This has been such a fantastic learning experience and no matter the outcome I will continue to pursue a career in fabric design. I hope that when people look at my fabric they get excited about sewing and can see how much I enjoy designing patterns!
